The 2013 Reginald Season presents the third year of the Seymour Centre’s initiative to promote the works from the small and independent arts sector.  The past two Reginald Seasons have produced eclectic, provocative, inventive, wonderfully diverse and robust works.

This year we bring you inspiring British playwright Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing, which celebrates its 20th anniversary and is also included as part of the Mardi Gras Festival.  Sport for Jove, who performed their hit Hamlet to sold out houses in 2012, will be presenting their interpretation of Othello which promises to be particularly exciting in the intimate Reginald Theatre.

One of the Seymour Centre’s resident companies Critical Stages, will be co-producing the hilarious black comedy Delectable Shelter from Hayloft, the company that brought you Thyestes. Critical Stages will also be presenting the latest and greatest of shows in a series titled Critical Stages Presents…?, including Songs for the Fallen and one other work so fresh we don’t even know yet what it will be!

Bookings for Beautiful Thing and Othello are now open, with Delectable Shelter, Critical Stages Presents…? and a couple of other yet to be announced shows to go on sale within the next few weeks.

The Reginald Season continues to thrive with the assistance of the many companies and individuals who have participated in the program, and the audiences who support it.

We look forward to experiencing some amazing works from the talented companies involved in our 2013 season.

A very exciting and diverse third Reginald Season show, Myths and Hymns is opening in less than a month on 10 October.

Prior to the opening of this fabulous season, the producers of Myths and Hymns will also host a Cabaret Night Fundraiser event this upcoming Monday 17 September at 8pm in the Sound Lounge. So come along for a fun filled cabaret event featuring Danni Da Ros, Garry Scale, Peter Eyers, Tyran Parke Kate Walder, Nat Jobe, Jennifer Peers, the Cast of Myths and Hymns and many more. Accompanied by the talented Daryl Wallis.

Lucky Door Prize and raffle on the night.

The concert will feature songs from musicals that have never had a professional staging in Sydney.

Bar will be open on the night, seating cabaret style, so get a table together and enjoy.

Myths and Hymns runs 10 – 27 October as part of the 2012 Reginald Season

The meat of the story lies in the exploration of the hot topic of immigration, as Coach Troy recruits asylum seekers to save the team. We get an inside view into each of these characters’ stories, particularly asylum seeker Sayyid.

When we asked Damian why he wrote about this particular issue, here’s what he said:

“Originally I was commissioned by Regional Arts Victoria and Vic Heath to write a show about racism to address the effects of racist values in rural society. There was actually no brief other than that so I had open slather. I already had the template for the dysfunctional football club from ‘Sportsman’s Night’, to which this show is the sequel. The asylum seeker issue is one that had always struck a nerve for me. The disproportionate vilification in this country of people trying to escape horrors we could never imagine, is both ignorant or shameful. Once I went down this path with the story I read for about three months – asylum seekers’ diaries; books charting the political course of Australian foreign policy; human rights etc, – that’s how I arrived at the story of the refugee character – Sayyid.” – Damian Callinan

And so friends, in order to raise awareness and funds for asylum seekers, the Seymour Centre in conjunction with the Asylum Seekers Centre and The Duck Inn are hosting a Trivia Night!
